Paty on Horseback
Rural Tourism
Paty do Alferes is a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where the main tourist branch is Rural Tourism. On horseback, visitors can explore the city's circuits, traveling along dirt roads that lead to farms, historic buildings, and many plantations, crops, and greenhouses, especially for coffee and primarily for tomatoes, which are a symbol of Paty. Therefore, we have selected three horseback riding routes for you to enjoy this adventure. The routes are mostly along local roads that pass through the rural area of Paty do Alferes, going by farms and eucalyptus plantations. The dirt road is very well maintained, as it is often used for the transportation of agricultural production.

This contemplative horseback ride starts at Praça Manoel Congo in downtown Paty do Alferes and continues to the Palmares Environmental Protection Area. Along the route, you’ll pass various regional landmarks, such as the 300-year-old Jequitibá tree and the Palmares Lake, which was artificially created by a man who decided to subdivide the valley region. The highlight is the paradise known as Sítio Araxá, which, with its orchards, plantations, and viewpoints, offers visitors an unforgettable agroecological experience, including accommodation and bird watching.
Horseback Riding Arcozelo x Capivara
This route starts at Aldeia Arcozelo, a historically significant site in the municipality. It was once the Fazenda da Freguesia, the scene of the largest slave escape in the region, led by Manoel Congo, who also names a square in downtown Paty. Along the route, you'll find Fazenda Santa Tereza, the Avelar Horto (a large eucalyptus plantation), and Paiol Velho, which hosts a farm of the same name. The route also includes SEAL, a place with tomato greenhouses and sales of agricultural products, the artisanal microbrewery Tenência, and a store with local products.
Avelar Horseback Riding

Saving the best for last, the Avelar Horseback Riding is perfect for a sunset ride. Along the way, you'll pass the beautiful Mary Orchids and the Ecological Farm Colônia de Férias Vila Rica, which is a great support point for visitors. The highlight of this ride is the visit to Fazenda Nosso Vilarejo/Sucupira, with its 140,000 coffee plants. Visitors can learn about artisanal agroecological coffee cultivation, visit a spectacular viewpoint with a 360º view of the entire region, and end the tour with a tasting at the Nosso Vilarejo Café.
