Description

Created in 2011, with about 9,841 hectares, the Parque Estadual da Costa do Sol (PECS) covers part of the municipalities of Araruama, Armação dos Búzios, Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio, Saquarema and São Pedro da Aldeia, in the Região dos Lagos. The unique layout of this strictly protected area is designed to protect the remaining fragments of Atlantic Forest ecosystems. The park area is full of natural and cultural attractions and has rich biodiversity, sheltering restingas, mangroves, marshes, lagoons, remarkable geological formations and archaeological sites. The PECS is made up of four sectors (núcleos), which cover the municipalities within its boundaries. The Atalaia-Dama Branca sector comprises part of Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo. The Massambaba sector covers Arraial do Cabo, Araruama and Saquarema. The Pau Brasil sector covers part of Cabo Frio and Armação dos Búzios, and the Sapiatiba sector covers the park area in the municipality of São Pedro da Aldeia.
