Caminho Dom Pedro Augusto
Description
The Path of Dom Pedro Augusto was once the favorite spot of an illustrious figure in Brazilian history. Empress Leopoldina, wife of D. Pedro, chose this region to host members of the court and nobles. The jequitibás and ironwood trees along the path enchanted the empress, who had a naturalist education from her time in Austria. The route is highly accessible for wheelchair users and visually impaired individuals, with information about the flora written in braille. It is also short and not very elevated. The lush nature competes for visitors' attention with unmissable 19th-century romantic-style constructions. The trail features one of the rare fountains created by the English philanthropist Richard Wallace, adorned with women in Greek robes, representing the four eternal virtues: Kindness, Charity, Sobriety, and Simplicity. Finally, along the trail, there is a stone bridge designed by Auguste Glaziou, the same French landscape architect who designed the Passeio Público in downtown Rio.
