Costão do Pão de Açúcar
Description
A tourist and geographical landmark of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, Sugarloaf is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting or living in the city. The Costão do Sugarloaf trail runs along the eastern face of the hill and includes sections of climbing. Besides your guide, you are likely to have company, as the mountain is one of the most climbed in the country. At the height of sugarcane cultivation in Brazil, sugar blocks were placed in a conical clay mold for transport to Europe. This mold was called sugarloaf and resembled the mountain, giving rise to the name. The trail begins with a beautiful view of Guanabara Bay, and gradually other landscapes unfold. From the top, there is a stunning panoramic view of Rio and Niterói. The descent from the hill can be an attraction in itself, as it can be done by cable car.
