Pedra do Conde
Description
The trail is another excellent option to explore in the Tijuca National Park, starting at an icon of the region: the Mayrink Chapel, built in 1855 and restored in 1944, when it received paintings by Portinari. The route also features geological attractions. During the hike, you will encounter a type of vegetation adapted to poor soil, composed mainly of small quartzite stones, a type of rock found only in certain parts of Rio de Janeiro. At the end of the trail, at an altitude of 819m, you will be able to see the northern slope of the Serra da Carioca, Pedra Bonita, Pedra da Gávea, Pico do Grajaú, Andaraí Maior, Pico da Tijuca, Tijuca Mirim, and other mountains of the forest. Count's Rock is named in honor of Aymar Marie Jacques Gestas, a farmer and merchant of fruits, wines, coffee, and exotic liqueurs from the early 19th century. The Count was the introducer of coffee planting, which devastated the Tijuca forest in a few decades, leading to its replanting 150 years ago.
