Trilha dos Encanados da Iracema
Description
Built in the early 18th century, the bandeirantes and settlers were expanding Portugal's domains, moving inland, motivated especially by gold. Miners from the Iguape region (Vale do Ribeira) ascended the mountain via indigenous paths until they reached the Paranapanema watershed. Upon arrival, they established small settlements and began working in alluvial gold mining using slave labor. The technique involved constructing channels reinforced with stone walls, where small portions of the river were diverted to extract and 'pan' the sediments. Many of these walls and diversions have largely survived to this day.
