Alcântara (Trecho 10 | Trilha Amazônia Atlântica)
Description
Alcântara was the first historical Amazonian city registered by IPHAN. That alone would be enough to motivate a trip to closely explore its vast architecture and colonial ruins, testimonies to the wealth of the former seat of the rural aristocracy of Maranhão. But Alcântara also holds great natural and cultural wealth. Among the natural aspects, we highlight the deserted beaches, streams, forests, vast mangroves, and islands with typical flora and fauna of the Amazon coast that serve as an anteroom to the Maranhense Reentrances. The cultural wealth is highlighted by the festival of the Divine Holy Spirit and the quilombola communities that earn it the title of the most quilombola municipality in the country - with traditions, practices, and knowledge that draw from a vibrant ancestry. By the way, an interesting fact: Maranhão is the most quilombola state in the Amazon region and in the country.

Tips
The rainy season runs from January to September, while the drier period occurs from July to December, but it is possible to hike the trail at any time of the year. You can hike independently or choose to hire local companies that offer support and guidance, ensuring a safer and more enriching experience. Along the way, you will find various spots for a refreshing dip in the streams, as well as rural and traditional communities that can provide support on your journey. Be prepared for high sun exposure, as the trail includes many dirt roads and some narrower paths (single tracks). For those seeking immersion in local culture, get ready to sleep in a hammock, a highly recommended experience widely used by the community. It is a lightweight and practical option, so don't forget to bring a pair of ropes approximately 1.2m long to hang it, ensuring a comfortable night's rest under the stars.
