Pico do Itaguaré
Description
Pico do Itaguaré is located on the border between Minas Gerais and the state of São Paulo, in the Serra da Mantiqueira, more precisely between Passa Quatro, MG, and Cruzeiro, SP. It is among the 10 highest mountains in the entire state of São Paulo, at 2,308 meters above sea level. The trail to its summit is demanding but very beautiful, and the view from the summit makes it worthwhile: on the final part of the hike you can see the Vale do Paraíba, the Serra Fina, the Serra da Bocaina, and Pico dos Marins. The name Itaguaré is an Indigenous word which in Tupi may mean “sacred stone” and/or “split stone.” Beyond this meaning, Pico do Itaguaré is also called the sleeping giant, because of the resemblance the peak bears to the face of a person lying down

It is possible to spend the night at the base of the second part - an open area amid the lower, high-altitude vegetation, with a water source nearby.
