Trilha Transmantiqueira

Route

The Trilha Transmantiqueira starts in the city of São Paulo, at the old Horto Florestal, now the Parque Estadual Alberto Löfgren, which is the first conservation area actually established in the entire State of São Paulo, right after the expropriation of the Engenho Pedra Branca. Even though it is not in the Serra da Mantiqueira, the start of the trail was planned in this region because of the flow of people who live in Brazil's largest metropolitan area, Greater São Paulo: this way, they could start hiking close to home, in addition to the proximity of Guarulhos airport, which is strategic for international hikers. After the Horto, the trail crosses the Parque Estadual da Cantareira and the MoNa da Pedra Grande, skirting the shores of the Represa do Jaguarí - which is the largest in the Cantareira system – and reaches the foot of the Serra do Lopo, where the Mantiqueira truly begins to become majestic. The trail heads west, crossing dozens of municipalities and protected areas until it reaches Aiuruoca-MG, in the Parque da Serra do Papagaio, where it splits into a west branch and a north branch. On the west branch, the trail continues until it reaches the municipality of Santa Rita de Ibitipoca-MG, where it enters the Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca and ends at the famous Janela do Céu. On the north branch, the trail continues until it ends in the municipality of Itumirim, first passing through the Chapada das Perdizes and Carrancas. Source: Trilha Transmantiqueira
