Route

This is one of the longest and physically demanding sections of the first half of the crossing. The trail develops and ends in the municipality of São João da Fronteira, in the state of Piauí — a city that, as the name suggests, is located on the historical and geographical border with the state of Ceará. This section is entirely within the limits of the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Serra da Ibiapaba. Unlike the stone slabs seen in the previous section, the ground here takes on a more reddish and sandy color, typical of the Chapada da Ibiapaba. The terrain ceases to be completely flat and begins to show false plains and gradual slopes as it approaches the city. The landscape is dominated by a more shrubby and dense Caatinga, interspersed with open areas of carnauba palms and buritis near small intermittent watercourses. Shade is scarce along most of the route, requiring heightened attention to sun exposure.
